INSTINCT: You’re only a couple of years older than me and you’ve lived twice the life I have! So, let’s start with the singing.
JOSHUA HARRELL: Well, that’s the hard part—within me is the singer and the businessman. I have always wanted to be an entertainer. When I’m up there, if I’m fortunate enough to make a connection with somebody, it means more to me than anything else. I get kind of deep and philosophical about it. And to have a CD that’s actually mine—that’s the coolest thing. I’m looking forward to my next album, Wonder. It’s due out in the fall.
Well, I’ve seen “Brighter Day” on YouTube, and it’s awesome. The lighting, the dancing, the half-naked male dancers!
My boyfriend’s in the video. He’s the guy in white who dances with me. No one else was going to get cast as my co-star, because he wasn’t going to let that happen. [Laughs] I knew we needed some sexy people, but I wasn’t gonna show skin and he wasn’t gonna show skin, so the director and the producer picked up two guys from the strip club.
Just so you know, I’m available for the next time. How do you juggle this and all your companies at once?
Being in business has always been a part of me. I hate going on vacation—I hate it unless I’m going someplace to do business as well.

Wha-wha-what?!
I feel useless. I went to Jamaica for 10 days. It was the most beautiful place on earth, but I was going crazy because I had nothing to do. So that’s me: I have to stay busy juggling all the different faces of Red Diamond Worldwide as well as being an artist. It’s just in my nature. I still like to have fun, I just have to have a purpose.
What about your partner?
He is the complete opposite. He wants to chill all the time; he wants to sleep in. Yeah, he’s not like me at all. And that’s probably a good thing. [Laughs]
What’s your favorite aspect of Red Diamond Worldwide?
I love my store, Otter. I loved creating it. I love the designing aspect of it. It’s just fun all the time. The people who contact me around the world thank me for being here, and it bewilders me and I love it. No matter what other brands I create, Otter in essence is me. All the other brands you’ll be able to find at Otter. Otter was featured in Charlie David’s new movie, Mulligans, which he wrote and starred in.

It is debuting in some film festivals this summer. I personally executive-produced the film. We also just opened our office in London and started a U.K. Otter site: otterfashion.co.uk.
Very nice. Now, what about Jock Soap?
[Laughs] It’s a little bit of trickery. I know guys like fragrant soaps. I will have that argument with anyone. There’s something in the back of our mind that tells us “Oh, no, we don’t want to smell like a fruit bowl.” Every shower gel you pick seems like it’s the same smell, so I wanted to bring more choices for men.
So is your inbox just insane?
Yeah, I gotta figure out how to manage that. My e-mails and my phone calls rule my day more than anything else. It’s like “Oh, what am I doing today? Let me check my inbox.” But don’t call me out like that.
Oops. I think we did. What’s the next business you want to open?
I can’t think of any. I have all the businesses I want. [Laughs]
