When this month’s cover model, Jeremy Katz, was a boy, he used to relish riding his bike, at top speeds, down the streets of his neighborhood in Beverly Hills, California. There was one street in particular, Maple Drive—with its asphalt buckled by the overgrown roots of shade trees—that was a favorite spot. With the wind rushing past his ears, his heart beating out of his chest and his little legs pedaling as fast as they could, Jeremy would fly down the street, hitting the raised pavement at just the right speed to lift up off the ground, hanging in midair, seemingly weightless for a single moment.
It’s not tough to see how Jeremy could go from a thrill-seeking adolescent to an EMT. The bike may be gone, but the now-20-year-old man with movie-star good looks and a charming disposition, gets to relive those heady daredevil days of boyhood every single day, in an ambulance flying down the streets of Los Angeles, with sirens ringing in his ears and his heart still beating out of his chest, toward whatever life-or-death situation might lie ahead.
But it’s not just the thrill of an emergency call that inspires Jeremy to get up every day and report to the ambulance for grueling 12-hour shifts when many his age are partying. It’s the idea of helping others, something he says he was born to do. “I can see the good in just about anybody,” he says, “and I try to help people when I can.”
Born in 1991—anyone else feel old?—Jeremy spent the seemingly endless summerlike days of his boyhood outside, under the Southern Californian sun. The self-described “adrenaline junkie” says he always loved being active: surfing, rollerblading, snowboarding and playing soccer and football with friends, though he admits he never played on a team. “I wanted to join the football team, but my mom wouldn’t sign the permission slip. She’s a Jewish mother; I don’t know very many Jewish mothers who would sign away for their children to play football,” he says, forgivingly.

His parents divorced when Jeremy was young, both remarrying and giving the then-only child five brothers and sisters. As the eldest child, Jeremy found himself taking care of his younger brothers and sisters, especially when his mother endured a medically complicated pregnancy with her youngest child. Jeremy remembers sacrificing a lot of time babysitting his infant brother, which gave him the opportunity to hone some of the caring skills he’d need later on in life in the back of an ambulance.
When he wasn’t caring for his younger brother or indulging his adrenaline addiction, Jeremy enjoyed spending time with his grandparents. He says some of his best childhood memories were nights he’d stay over at their house. “I’d sneak into their room after they’d gone to bed. My grandma would be awake, and she’d always have dark chocolate by her bed, and she’d sneak me some right before bed,” he remembers. “My mom hated that.” He’d also spend time with his grandfather, lying on his “humongous beer belly,” watching Westerns. Though his grandfather has since passed away, Jeremy confides that his grandmother still sneaks him dark chocolate when he visits her.

Sure, the “Copper” Air Penny 1 is one of the biggest releases of the year so far; however, the “Copper” color scheme appeared on another major Nike release in 2009.
