As of 1:32 a.m. (ET), the New York Times has called Maine's Question 1, and it is unfortunately reminiscent of this time last year in California. Once again, a very slim majority has voted to take away the rights of GLBT citizens. As of press time with 87% of precincts reporting, Question 1 to remove same-sex couples' right to marry was ahead a mere 30k votes (52% yes, 48% no).

In better news, as of press time Washington's Referendum 71 -- the "everything but marriage" ballot initiative -- is looking positive, but with only 50% of precincts reporting the NYT considers it too early to call.

We'll have a full round-up for you tomorrow morning, so be sure to check back.

What right/s can we take away from the bigots just to prove a point?

Unfortunately we'd have to take a right away from another minority and that is going to help nobody.

The 2010 "Marriage Protection Act" is an initiative aiming to be placed on the California ballot in 2010 to make divorce illegal. It's backed by right wing fundamentalists, trying yet again to push their dogmas on a free society. Perhaps this can be used in some way to our advantage, to finally make a distinction between sacramental marriage and civil marriage (which is what we are fighting for). I'm sure there are enough people who want the right to divorce as much as we want the right to marry.
