The Iowa Family Policy Center (IFPC) has reasserted its erroneous, shock-value claim that marriage equality is more dangerous than smoking. The anti-gay group asserts that because HIV and certain other STDs are more prevalent in the gay male population, that Iowa’s legalization of marriage equality should be overturned in the interest of public health.

But when the group first posted the vilifying claim last month for its followers, everyone with any modicum of sense was quick to point out its major flaws:

  1. The Center for Disease Control -- which the IFPC cites in its claim! -- itself has many times in the past noted that homophobia and homophobic stigma aid in the spread of HIV and thwart gay men from prevention and getting tested, meaning tolerance and social acceptance is a possible way to combat HIV/AIDs among the gay population.
  2. Marriage and promiscuity are two very different things, meaning Iowa’s landmark marriage equality law has absolutely nothing to do with the HIV/STD studies

Despite these flaws that render the IFPC’s “Sodomy is worse than smoking” campaign (which includes the picture of Rep. Barney Frank smoking above), the “pro-family” group has decided to reinstate the tactic in the hopes of stirring up easily-influenced, bigoted Iowans so that they may rally their politicians to “punish wicked behavior.”

So how do they explain the Lesbian population who have significantly lower rates of HIV infection compared to straight men and women. Another case of selective hearing/vision from the Family Policy center.

Can I have a rolls eyes smiley please?

As a former Iowan, I would like to believe Iowans are much more fair-minded and not so easily influenced by bogus claims and assertions from ultra right-wing groups. Let Iowa stand proudly as a bastion of equality and liberation. I'm quite proud to call Iowa a second home these days.
