Arizona's governor took on people who don't look white illegal immigrants last year, and now it appears gay families are next. Find out about the bill that many are screaming is homophobic after the jump.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) signed a bill yesterday which mandates that heterosexual parents be given priority when applying for adoption proceedings. As in, two couples go to an adoption agency and all four individuals could make equal pay, have the same jobs, hold the same moral compass and possess the exact, undeniable, strong dedication to raise a child—but because one pair happens to be a male and a female, they get first dibs.
"The governor’s action today is harmful to children in foster care and group homes who are seeking a permanent home and the support of a loving, caring family," said Tom Mann, chairman for Equality Arizona, which strongly opposed the bill. "SB 1188 takes the focus off of what’s in the best interest of a child when adoption decisions should be made on a case-by-case basis, according to what’s in a child’s best interest. Each case is unique. For example, adoption authorities may have the choice between placing a child with a beloved single aunt — or complete strangers. The only consideration should be determining what’s in the best interest of the child."
However, one thing Brewer may have done right Monday is veto the state's so-called "Birther Bill," which would have set up specific requirements for presidential candidates to meet in order to appear on a state ballot—a response to the "birther" craze surrounding President Obama.
