Austin Will Become First City In Texas To Back Marriage Equality PDF Print

We've been meaning to make a trip to Texas (where everything is apparently "bigger") and we're pretty sure our first stop will be in Austin!

All signs point to the Austin City Council making Austin the first city in the state to formally back marriage equality in a resolution vote on Thursday!

More after the jump!

According to the Dallas Voice:

"Sources tell us the resolution is all but certain to pass, making Austin the first city in the state to formally back marriage equality.

More than 1,700 people signed a petition in support of the resolution posted by Equality Texas last month.

The resolution is sponsored by Mayor Lee Leffingwell, Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole and Councilwoman Laura Morrison. It is backed by Equality  Texas, the Human Rights Campaign, the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Leffingwell, Cole and Morrison will join representatives from the groups for a press conference at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at City Hall."

Equality Texas certainly sounds confident in a statement today, saying:

“The Council resolution recognizes that marriage is a powerful and important affirmation of love and commitment and a source of social support and recognition. Passage of this resolution will send the message to state and national leaders that Austin is a community that values equality for all its citizens. The resolution will also send the message that the City of Austin believes all couples in loving and committed relationships should be given the opportunity to create stronger and more successful families through civil marriage.”

We're really getting into this Austin, Texas idea. We hear they've got a great music scene, Tex-Mex and barbecue cuisine (not that we're eating it!!), studs are presumably walking around in cowboy boots and assless chaps, and now they're promoting LGBT equality?

Let's do this. Now who's got a place for us to stay?!

Austin is a wonderful city. A small island of blue in a vast sea of red conservatism. The music and food is amazing. And the guys are pretty hot. Been here three years & don't want to move!

Austin is a great place to live! Aside from the assless chaps the story covers all the great details about my fair city. Kudos to our mayor for championing our rights as citizens and human beings in America!!

Our State Rep, Jim Keffer Republican-Eastland, describes Austin as "20 square miles surrounded by reality" when talking with his rural constituents. His conservative West Texas District is a "Trickle Down Equality" kind of District and about 50 years behind the times in many ways! Kudos to the Austin folks for supporting marriage equality and honoring Americans like Andrew Wilfahrt.

"The best way to honor our son, U.S. Army Cpl. Andrew Charles Wilfahrt,
is to keep fighting for marriage equality every day," Lori Wilfahrt

Travis County, the country containing Austin, was the only county in Texas to vote against secession in the Civil War.

That should give you an idea of how long Austinians have been different from Texans.

I live in Austin, not Texas. This a wonderful city, and even though there aren't actually boys in assless chaps or even cowboy hats, the population is still damn fine-looking.

Travis County (where Austin is located) has allowed domestic partnerships to be registered at the County Clerk's office since 1993 (which my partner and I did as soon as they allowed it). Way to go Austin City Council! When all my east coast and west coast friends and family ask me how I can stand to live in texas, I alawys tell them "I live in Austin, not Texas. There's a BIG difference".

As my friend Jesse would say, all chaps are assless. As I tell all my friends in Georgia, Austin is the only place in Texas I want to be a part of. And for the record its Austinites, not Austinians! I love the people, the food, the laidback atmosphere, the scenery, and the allergies (hahah)
Austin is home sweet home!
