What a month for marriage equality, right? As we told you earlier, the vote on same-sex marriage legislation in the Maryland House was close, but love prevailed. After taking a few hours to break, the state's delegates reconvened at 4:30 p.m. EST and passed the "Civil Marriage Protection Act."
The vote was 71-67, the 71 votes the minimum needed for passage. Gov. Martin O'Malley moves one step closer to being able to sign the marriage equality legislation he's campaigned so hard for after today's advancement by the state's House.
The hours worth of debate was often impassioned, with some opponents resorting to the stale talking points we've heard for decades. Delegate Emmet Burns, in particular, stood out with his rancor after saying that he believes people have a right to be gay (thanks, Burnsie!), but not a right to marriage.
Despite the pervasive ignorance, the Maryland House was packed to the brim with civil rights supporters as reports throughout the afternoon increasingly indicated the vote would favor the side of love.
Congrats on this huge step, Marryland!
