Governor Jerry Brown has signed two important bills for the advancement of transgender equality into law! After the jump, learn about the historic news.

Transgender Law Center reports:

"The first, the Gender Nondiscrimination Act, brings transgender rights out of the closet in California – making 'gender identity and expression' its own protected category at work, at school, in housing, at public accommodations and in other settings. The second, the Vital Statistics Modernization Act, makes it easier for transgender people to get a court-ordered gender change and updated birth certificate. It’s a big day for transgender folks in California."

Both these bills, obviously, go hand-in-hand. Transgender people often struggle with finding work because of prejudice and discrimination, this will allow many transgender people the opportunity to have the proper identification and protection from now on.

What a huge step for Californian trans people! Thanks to the advocates and Governor Brown!
