Just in time for the annual Folsom Street Fair, SF District Supervisor of the Castro Scott Wiener says there would be some exceptions to the hypothetical ban on nudity in the neighborhood.

Details (and NSFW imagery and links) after the jump.

According to more information from the Bay Area Reporter:

After last week's story was published, Wiener contacted the B.A.R. to clarify that if he does submit a public nudity ban it would only apply to "streets, sidewalks, and public plazas." It would exempt such public gatherings as this Sunday's Folsom Street Fair and the annual LGBT Pride celebration. "Anything I would propose would not apply to parades and street festivals," said Wiener. Technically, under the current rules, anyone can be naked on the streets of San Francisco as long as they are not aroused. While there is no written rule banning the wearing of cock rings, the police have been informing male nudists in the Castro not to sport the genital jewelry as doing so crosses the line into indecent behavior that is citable.

Will those exceptions make Scott's consideration of a ban on nudity any more palatable to critics?

The haute couture on display at New York Fashion Week has nothing on the long-running jewelry exhibition folks unintentionally view when walking the streets of San Francisco's Castro neighborhood.

But the once open-ended (no pun intended) exhibition might be coming to a close as the ironically named district Supervisor Scott Wiener announces he is considering banning public nudity in "Cock Ring Row."

Bay Area Reporter has the scoop:

A showdown over whether San Francisco should ban public nudity is looming as the issue again rears its head. This time the tipping point may be due to naked men wearing cock rings.

District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener disclosed to the Bay Area Reporterthis week that he is open to introducing legislation at City Hall that would ban public nudity.

"I have not done so right now but I am considering to do that in the near future," said Wiener, whose district covers the Castro and a public plaza where many nudists gather on sunny days.

His reviewing of whether stricter rules are required is being driven by an increase in the number of naked men wearing cock rings in public, said Wiener. His office has been fielding calls all summer from constituents upset with the practice.

"People are absolutely repulsed by it," said Wiener.

Wiener, who is openly gay, admits he thinks the more adventurous exhibitionists cross the line.

What do you think, Insitncters? Should San Francisco ban public nudity?

If he's talking about doing it, then he's going to do it. We live in a society that is obsessed with hiding anything that regards the human body, sexuality, etc. It won't ever change.

Sorry, Nero...cock rings are comfortable and attractive. It's no different than wearing a bracelet on your wrist or a chain around your neck. Yes, they CAN serve a sexual function, but that isn't all they are made for.

i live in the neighborhood and i'm sick of it - all these old guys who don't live in my neighborhood, park their cars and walk around nude all day and have this arrogance that they are more progressive than everyone else. they want to turn my neighborhood into the folsom street fair and my neighbors and i won't allow it. yes nudity is fine and that is not the issue. these guys are perverts and exhibitionists. especially the guy that always wears the wig and sits by the streetcar turn-around.

seems to me a lot of people visiting the castro will associate these guys with the lgbt movement and their behavior is gonna turn some people off marriage equality and gay rights. they already have nude beaches in san francisco including one or two gay ones. why don't these guys just go there?

I've never been there, but from what several people have told me the Castro used to be the low rent district of SF then the gay men moved it and worked their butts of making it the amazing open minded haven the uptight hetero johnny come latelies are trying to destroy, if you don't like that part of our culture stay out of the area we built up.

I am a gay man who lives in the neighborhood, and I am tired to seeing these guys prancing around in the nude. Take it to a nude beach, your back yard or save it for Folsom & Dore Alley fairs. This would NEVER be tolerated on Union Street, Union Square or any other neighborhood of SF.

The folks running around naked are juvenile. Grow up

Why is it a problem to see a human body? I'll tell you why, if you are xtian then you probably believe the humans are made in the image of God. In other words, your body is the picture of God. Who doesn't want to see God running around on the earth? That's right, Satan, the devil himself. think about it.

San Fran's Castro district is the last place I ever thought I would hear such nonsense from... freak flags need to fly - and it is a tradition in this area. Tired of it? Don't like it? Move. Don't look. It's just a human body. It's a cock. It's a butt. You know what is juvenile? Whining about nudity. If you're that uptight, then you probably are living in the wrong place. But hey, everybody else should just cop to your hang ups because... oh, wait... umm, why? You're like that hypocritical lady on The Simpsons who is always saying "Think of the children!" Grow up. And for a politician supposedly representing the area to come out and suggest this? It's time for a recall.

I have nothing against nudity, but it's important to remember that the whole country watches the Castro —often, via the right-wing press— as an example of the "typical" behavior of the LGBT community. This sort of thing plays perfectly into the hands of the homophobic naysayers and lawmakers. I say, 'take it to the beach', guys.

Public Nudity at condign events like the Folsom Street Fair is sexy and fun, addresses the exhibitionist in me, allows me to show-off the body I spend close to a thousand hours a year working on, etc.

However I think it's wrong to equate Gay Pride with exhibitionism. This is especially the case with the Parade, which is our community presenting itself to the rest of the world.
