As Bishop Richard J. Malone continues his attempts to raise money to fight equality in Maine, fellow Catholics in his state are worried his hateful intolerance is driving parishioners away from the church. Launched to show that not all Catholics are homophobic, Catholics for Marriage Equality is hoping to clean the image tarnished by the likes of Malone and other foes of equality.
From the Catholics for Marriage Equality website:
The American principle of the separation of Church and State was enshrined in the Constitution to ensure that no particular religious perspective would be imposed on our pluralistic society.
Catholic teaching on social justice has been central to the building of a just society, creating awareness of diversity in the human family, calling us to lives of respect for one another, and not only tolerance.
It’s a refreshing change of pace for some in the faith to adhere to Christian tenets. You can sign the group's petition supporting marriage equality in Maine ahead of November's ballot initiaitve here.
