It looks like Boston isn't the only city looking to keep hate chicken outside of its borders.
Chicago alderman, Proco "Joe" Moreno, plans to block Chick-fil-A's attempt to build a second store in the Northwest Side ward of the city and he has the support of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel!
More after the jump.
Moreno tells The Chicago Tribune, "If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don't want you in the 1st Ward."
Referring to Chick-fil-A President DanCathy's "bigoted, homophobic comments," he says, "Because of this man's ignorance, I will now be denying Chick-fil-A's permit to open a restaurant in the 1st Ward."
Mayor Rahm Emanuel shares the alderman's sentiments, stating, "Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values. They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents. This would be a bad investment, since it would be empty."
Apparently Moreno's ability to block Chick-fil-A is based on what the Tribune calls "a rarely violated Chicago tradition known as aldermanic privilege, which dictates that City Council members defer to the opinion of the ward alderman on local issues."
While Chick-fil-A has already obtained a zoning permit for a restaurant in the 2500 block of North Elston Avenue, according to Moreno, it must seek council approval to divide the land so it can purchase an out lot near Home Depot.
That doesn't seem likely to happen under Moreno's watch. He says, "You have the right to say what you want to say, but zoning is not a right."
Moreno explains that he's had discussions with Chick-fil-A regarding their stance on gay-rights issues, prior to President Dan Cathy's explicit anti-gay remarks.
Moreno says "Company executives assured him they would take no stance on the issue of gay rights and would not discriminate in any fashion at the restaurant."
Guess that didn't last long.
If Chick-fil-A wants a place in Moreno's ward they'll need "more than words."
He says, "They'd have to do a complete 180. They'd have to work with LGBT groups in terms of hiring, and there would have to be a public apology from (Cathy)."
