Did RuPaul go against her own best advice and fuck it up at Sydney Mardi Gras on Saturday? Many revelers who waited for hours to make up an audience of thousands at SMG's Saturday night main event have been asking "What went wrong with RuPaul?" Details follow.
Folks who were in the crowd at the highly anticipated peak-hour show as well as those behind the scenes are accusing the American drag legend of embracing diva status a little too closely before and during the concert.
“Who knows why, but right before she was due to take to the stage she refused to go on with the dancers and said she wanted to perform solo,” an insider said.
“The dancers were really shocked. They had been preparing all day. They ended up going out and performing the number anyway once RuPaul finished. They couldn’t just waste having 40 dancers dressed, rehearsed and ready to go.”
They also claimed that Ru would not give after-party organisers a recording of the song she intended to sing, “Supermodel”, until 2pm on the day of the show.
“There were other restrictions too. Like the dancers – when they were going to appear with her – weren’t allowed in a certain box that had been taped on the stage around (RuPaul),” the spy added.
Despite the gossip, a spokesman for Mardi Gras insists it wasn't all drama with Ru. “RuPaul did not confirm the track she intended to sing until the day of the performance, which is not unusual,” he said. “She also decided the song would be performed solo but it wasn’t overly dramatic or disastrous. The dancers came on after her but performed a different song called Cover Girl, which was the other song that was rehearsed (before knowing the track).”
Whether or not Ru's rumored diva antics are valid, her "bored" performance of "Supermodel" was tangible enough to leave many fans underwhelmed and disappointed in the star.
“I was camped out in the RHI to see a drag superstar, not Kylie like most other partygoers,” Aussie drag star Shellie Legs Diamond told Same Same. “That’s why I was so disappointed by what I saw. Everyone was like WTF!?”
Take a look and judge for yourselves, Instincters. Based on this performance, would you tell Ru to shante and stay or sashay away?

Not surprising - it's always only been about her. When she shot to stardom 20 years ago, did she bring anyone with her? And for all her "mentoring" on the show, why does she let others disclose their positive HIV status and not have the courage to do it herself? I'll bet the dancers put on an actual show for the audience!
