Voters in Anchorage, Alaska overwhelmingly turned down Proposition 5, a bill designed to protect the city's LGBT community from discrimination in employment. Or did they?
Early results reported last night in Alaska indicated that Proposition 5 had succumbed to the Fundamentalist Christian opposition with voters overwhelmingly opposing the pro-gay legislation.
However, the blog Bent Alaska discovered that on election day, No on 5 organizers may have engaged in a bit of voter fraud, tossing the fate of the proposition up in the air.
According to Bent Alaska, No on 5 posted a Facebook status misinforming voters that they can register at the polls on election day. However, Anchorage law cuts off voter registration 30 days ahead of any given election.
Wrote No On 5 on Facebook in a post that has since been deleted:
Attention Young People or First Time Voters – YOU CAN REGISTER AND VOTE AT THE SAME LOCATION TODAY !! It is super easy. Take a few minutes TODAY and stop by a polling station, register to vote (all you need is your AK driver’s license) and cast a NO Vote on Prop. 5. We really need you to vote. Tell at least 3 of your friends how easy it is.
Click on the MyNeighborhood link below to find your polling place. Once in MyNeighborhood type in your address, then use the Political pull down menu. A map with your polling place location, street address, and Assembly representatives will be displayed.
Now, Anchorage's Deputy Municipal Clerk Jacqueline Duke says that in light of the information, election officials have thousands of questionable ballots to sort through to get to the bottom of this mess. Still, Yes On 5 is not entirely sure the impact of redacted votes will be enough to switch around yesterday's early results in favor of anti-discrimination in Anchorage.
