The real-world effect of Sec. of State Hillary Clinton's impassioned speech on international LGBT rights might be felt sooner than we had anticipated. Following Clinton's call for human rights, Malawi is said to be considering a review of its anti-gay laws.
Thanks to Clinton's speech, Malawi's Justice Minister Ephraim Chiume has pledged to “review a series of controversial laws, including a ban on homosexual acts."
Chiume went on to say that "in view of the sentiments from the general public and in response to public opinion regarding certain laws, the government wishes to announce to the Malawi nation that it is submitting the relevant laws and provisions of laws to the Law Commission for review."
In October, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron threatened to circumvent funds to Commonwealth countries with a poor human rights record, possibly also spurring Malawi's reaction.
