As long as the Mayan prophecy doesn't come true, 2013 is looking to be a lucky year for France's LGBT community. Details follow.

In line with France's new Socialist President Francois Hollande's campaign promise to "open the right to marriage and adoption to homosexual couples," Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault today announced that full equality will become reality in 2013.

Mr Ayrault was making a keynote speech setting out the socialist government’s five-year political and social agenda.

“In the first half of 2013, the right to marriage and adoption will be open to all couples, without discrimination,” he said.

“Our society is evolving, lifestyles and mentalities are changing. The government will respond to that.”

Same-sex couples living in France currently have the option of obtaining PACS (similar to civil unions) but adoption rights and the many benefits of marriage are off limits.
