Electronic Arts has for years embraced same-sex relationships in the virtual worlds of its gaming products. But by joining a coalition of business opposing the Defense of Marriage Act, the leading game maker is now officially pushing for the legal recognition of these relationships in reality.
EA released a statement earlier this week urging the overturn of DOMA. Reads the statement in part:
DOMA presents a number of problems for businesses like EA, as it creates regulatory, tax, and discrimination complications for employers, and that's why we're standing against it. The underlying lawsuit impacts all employers no matter how big or small, and no matter the industry, and we encourage other business to join these efforts.
It's hardly new territory for the game maker: EA came under fire from hate groups for adding same-sex relationships to its online multiplayer hit Star Wars: The Old Republic.
