Heartbreakers: Toronto Zoo To Breakup Gay Penguin Pair & Force Them To Breed With Chicks PDF Print

Seemingly taking cues from NOM, Marcus Bachmann's "ex gay" clinic and other dangerous "conversion" centers, the Toronto Zoo has decided to break-up a gay penguin couple deemed in love and force them to mate with available females. Details follow.

Buddy and Pedro, like the famous penguin boyfriends at zoos in New York, Japan, Germany and SeaWorld Orlando, are inseparable, and by all accounts (considering what they're observed doing every night) are a monogamous gay couple.

But while you and I "ooh" and "ahh" at the undeniable adorable factor the pair eschews, zookeepers in Toronto are plotting a way to split the lovers up, and, perhaps even more traumatically, force them to breed with females.

Reports the Toronto Star:

Buddy and Pedro’s relationship, however you describe it, is destined to come to an end soon because they have a duty. They have top-notch genes, so the zoo intends to separate them from each other and pair them with females for breeding.

Given that African penguins are endangered, the move falls within a species survival plan among zoos.

Buddy, 20, and Pedro, 10, are in Toronto as part of the popular African penguin exhibit that opened at the zoo in May. The two, bred in captivity, were part of a group of 12 penguins — six male, six female — that came to Toronto from zoos in the U.S.

Even though zoo officials close to the pair admit that "they seem to be in a loving relationship of some sort," it is now time for Buddy and Pedro to pass along the genes they were brought to Toronto to hand off.

Considering the African penguin's designation as endangered, how do you feel about the Toronto Zoo's move to split apart love and force gay penguins into heterosexual acts?

That's SO not right! If they're emotionally pair-bonded, they will likely languish without their partner and their health will suffer. Who says they'll even mate with a female if forced to try. Seems like there must be some way to capture their sperm for artificial insemination of the females if necessary. It's certainly done with other domestic species for breeding purposes.

This is a horrible story I understand that they are there to breed, but that isn't what they want to do. Why are we forcing them to conformh

How do we feel!? They're penguins!!! Why do we find it necessary to anthropomorphize animals? Stick to dressing up your rat-dogs, and leave the zoo to do its job.

I though penguins were one of the only animals that mated for life? so even if they did separate them, they wouldn't mate with another penguin anyway..

what makes these zoo people so sure that they will even mate with the females?

I'm not sure as to what bondings occur in the penguin world, i.e. if they bond for life and stop breeding if their partner dies, or if their partner dies if they find another... These two are bonded to each other and I do believe that the odds of them bonding and/or breeding with any other penguin is unlikely. So separating them is just being cruel. If there's other means of fertilization they should do that first. Their species is endangered; so as a last resort, I think that trying to force a breeding bond would be acceptable.

As endangered as African Penguins are I would think Gay African Penguins are even more endangered... smilies/wink.gif

I hope for their sake that they are just horny little buggers that will mate with anything otherwise they may just languish and die apart...

hensdad...people anthropomorphize animals because we humans think we know everything and we are better than everything else, so we try to make everything as we are, when really, we should just leave stuff as it is. like these penguins. in stead of separating them, just toss a could females into the mix and let nature decide what to do. after all, nature does what nature wants. humans are the ones that try to force it or give it any rhyme or reason. i say leave them be. they probably wouldn't even be endangered if HUMANS would leave stuff alone. let them "love" each other in peace. we could learn something from it.

So much has already been taken away from these creatures we are supposed to share the earth with not dominate over. Support all of them to breed for their survival but don't force their separation. Can getting sperm samples happen painlessly if zoo keepers are so worried?

If they are gay are they going to mate with females? Don't most animals mourn their mates and young if separated from them? Maybe the penguins will be depressed? Is it politically incorrect to suggest a turkey baster to penguins?
