We blogged back in February that while on hiatus from his TV show, Neil Patrick Harris would be taking up directing by staging a special presentation of Rent at the famed Hollywood Bowl.

Well, E! just broke casting news, and we can't say we're super excited...

Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical fame (or more appropriately, the chick you ignore when looking at Zac Efron pictures) will be filling the heroin-laced boots for the leading role of Mimi. Really?!

"She came in for a work session, and I must say, Vanessa really impressed," Harris said in a statement. "She looks amazing, has great vocal chops and seems really committed to honoring the somewhat iconic role of Mimi. I look forward to audiences seeing a dark, edgy and very different side of Vanessa Hudgens this August."

Alright, we'll admit that we've never actually seen High School Musical, so maybe we're being too quick to judge here. But she just didn't seem like the obvious choice, which may be exactly why Harris picked her. Let's just hope this doesn't become the family-friendly version of Rent.

Sometimes its better to let something go when its at its best, instead of trying to revive the dead. RENT was at its height not so long ago, when it was ON Broadway, with the original cast. Although it was one of my favorite shows, it began to lose its luster when they tried to keep it alive by casting D-List stars like Joey Fatone and Drew Lachey to take the starring role and keep ticket sales flowing in. Once you begin to compromise the integrity of a show simply for a few more bucks, it ruins the intended experience. Even the official Broadway tour (which closed earlier this year) seemed to perhaps make the show a bit of a characture of itself. Although Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp are great artists, seeing 40 year old men play 20 something guys didn't really do it. My fear is that this new, a decade too soon, revival-esque night is going to slaughter the show even further. Call me a rent purist, but the show is DARK and GRITTY, about sex, drugs, AIDS, homelessness, and most of all love. Those who saw it at the Neederlander Theatre on 41st St know the theatre was dirty and deliberately broken down, grafetti splashed on the front walls. This was all part of the experience that made RENT great. Maybe NPH can prove me wrong, but I have a very hard time imagining how the glitzy Hollywood bowl and Vanessa Hudgens can recreate anything that would even closely resemble what Jonathan Larson intended the show to be. RIP RENT.

Very good points AlexS. I agree. Let things go gracefully.

Whatevs. Any excuse to run another Zac picture is all the reason I need. And I'm glad to see he appears to have gotten the tanning under control, LOL.
