When it rains, it pours!
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has come out in favor of marriage equality.
More after the jump!
A statement from one of Quinn's spokespersons, Brooke Anderson, reads: "Governor Quinn joins with President Obama in supporting marriage equality and looks forward to working on this issue in the future with the General Assembly."
Quinn was unwilling to take a stand on same-sex marriage as recently as February. That appears to have changed with Obama's recent same-sex marriage announcement.
Quinn signed Illinois civil unions into law in 2011 and is now "looking forward to a full legislative debate" on marriage. He has said that he would sign same-sex marriage into law.
Quinn has had strong backing from LGBT groups based on his support for civil unions. Now he intends to shift that support to same-sex marriage.
His spokesman writes, "Civil unions were a huge victory for civil rights and major progress for Illinois. It took a lot of teamwork and partnership with the General Assembly to win passage of this landmark law, and marriage equality will as well."
