Known as the father of computer science, Alan Turing was a gay man who committed suicide in the '50s after being convicted of "gross indecency" and sentenced to undergo hormone therapy. A screenplay about his life was bought (for major bucks!) earlier Wednesday. Details after the jump.
Alan Turing ascended to fame when he devised the Turing Bombe, a codebreaking device that was used to decipher the Nazi enigma codes, up to 3,000 messages per day. He committed suicide by eating a cyanide-laced apple, and his life from 1940 through 1955 is now the subject of a big spec script sale today.
Deadline notes that first-time screenwriter Graham Moore’s The Imitation Game was picked up by Warner Bros in a 7-figure deal and Leonardo DiCaprio ”has the inside track." Word is that no one is officially attached but Ron Howard has expressed interest in directing.
“Think The King’s Speech without the huge uplifting ending,” Deadline adds.
So, basically this is a movie to remind the world that discrimination probably held us back in the advancement of technology. Lesson learned? Probably not.
Though we have to admit, the gays do make excellent topics for dramas...and comedies, for that matter.
