Starbucks has received an extra shot of support thanks to a new endorsement boycott engineered by the National Organization for Marriage. Coffee humor!
Finding the coffee giant's support of the LGBT community too bitter to swallow, NOM's subsequent boycott of Starbucks has backfired and exploded tenfold in a wave of support for its target. The details (with 80 percent less coffee comedy, promise), after the jump!
Last week NOM's henchwoman Maggie Gallagher attended Starbuck's annual shareholders meeting in D.C. to probe the coffee company's support of marriage equality. After receiving a statement she and her minions didn't like, NOM immediately launched "Drop Starbucks"—an effort to get a few of its remaining homophobic sheeple to switch their coffee brand to something less tolerant and American than Sbux.
In tandem with NOM's war on Starbucks, SumOfUs launched a retaliatory "Thank You, Starbucks" petition for supporters of the corporation to let their voices be heard.
Guess which campaign/petition has garnered more signatures?
"Thank You, Starbucks," by far!
As of this writing, SumOfUs's campaign has 249,289 signatures, 700 short of its goal of 250,000. According to organizers, the petition has amassed over 50,000 signatures in 48 hours.
On the other homo hand, NOM's pitiful "Drop Starbucks" pledge seems to have peaked at roughly 19,000 signatures. Wah-wah.
Perhaps pro-gay companies in need of drumming up support and sales should ask the National Organization for Marriage and Maggie Gallagher to launch a protest their way?
