American Idol knows full well that its musical chairs game of selecting judges has now become more entertaining that its actual karaoke show, so they're giving us EVERYTHING they can to stay in the news.

With Steven Tyler out (as we reported on Thursday) and Jennifer Lopez giving Ryan Seacrest yet another resignation notice today, the hunt for new blood has been kicked into high gear with Mariah Carey becoming the latest star rumored to be in negotiations to join as a judge.

“I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do that I put … on hold because I love Idol so much," Jennifer said on Ryan Seacrest's Friday's broadcast. "I could do Idol for the rest of my life, but that would be giving up a bunch of other things. We had an amazing run.”

With two empty seats now available (and folks begging Randy Jackson to leave the show as well), AI knows it might be time to get someone who can actually sing filling one of the empty slots behind the giant Coca-Cola cups.

And Mariah Carey it might be, according to People. "She's in play," said People's source. "They are in serious talks."

Don't hold your breathy falsettos, however, Instincters; last week it was Adam Lambert that was quickly rumored to be in negotiations before the singer issued a statement denying the gossip.

Still, if given the chance, should MiMi take the gig?
