After officially coming out, Johnny Weir made it clear that he wasn't about to be a gay rights icon. But as time moves on (and sparked by the U.S. Olympic Committee's appointment of a homophobic Prop 8 activist), he's ready to unsheath the claws. Find out what Johnny has to say about anti-gay activist Peter Vidmar being named the U.S. Olympic liason to London 2012, after the jump...
Nearly six weeks back, a blog on Instinct announcing Vidmar's appointment caused quite the comment debate. Now, figure skating icon Johnny Weir has joined in the discussion.
Speaking with the Chicago Tribune, Johnny criticized the move.
“I certainly wouldn’t want to be represented by someone who is anti gay marriage," said Johnny. "It isn’t just about marriage, it is being allowed equal rights as Americans. The fact this man who is very publicly against something that may be represented on the American team is disgraceful.”
I've had my issues with Johnny before and I will certainly never draft an unwilling newly-outed celebrity into gay activism, but I'm loving this fiercer, more aggressive side of the star!
