Office Depot has its paws up! The company has announced it will donate at least $1 million to support Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation, a move that is being met with both applause and (not surprisingly) some backlash.

More after the jump.

The Born This Way Foundation’s mission is to encourage today’s youth to grow up feeling confident about their individuality.

According to their press release, “Custom products include empowerment gift cards (with a face value of $20), with one of six messages on the front: ‘Be Brave,’ ‘Be Amazing,’ ‘Be Yourself,’ ‘Be Kind,’ ‘Be Accepting,’ and ‘Be Involved.’ Parents, students, and teachers can use the $20 gift card to purchase incredible back-to-school essentials at Office Depot, and afterwards can proudly clip their cards to their backpack or belt loop showing their support of the movement.

Also available will be limited-edition “Kindness Sticks” Post-It® Notes, limited-edition Sharpie® pens, and unique “Bravery Bracelets,” each of which feature Born This Way Foundation’s logo, as well as the same six messages of empowerment as the gift cards.”

Twenty-five percent of the sales of these limited edition products will be donated to the Born This Way Foundation, with a guaranteed donation of $1 million this year.

Cynthia Germanotta, aka Grandmother Monster (she’s Gaga’s mom) and president of the Born This Way Foundation, says “Office Depot is a place that brings together students as well as their families and teachers, who play such an important role in inspiring and supporting today's youth. With Office Depot's support, we will empower millions of young people this back-to-school season, letting them know that it's okay to be yourself.”

Bob Moore, chief marketing officer for Office Depot, shares the love, stating: “Born This Way Foundation is an inspirational organization that has the power to make a difference in the lives of today's youth and we are honored to join this movement and help raise awareness for such an important cause.”

Of course, not everyone’s thrilled by Office Depot’s support of empowerment and inclusiveness.

The Florida Family Association’s David Caton is attacking the “irresponsible message to many teens who would have eventually chose to be straight.”

Caton writes:

“Thousands of kids who might have otherwise worked through their pubescent sexual identity issues will be inspired to accept the wrong choice based upon this unscientific, emotionally charged born this way propaganda. What’s brave or kind about telling thousands of sexually frustrated teens that they were born this way when a high percentage of them would have ended up taking the straight heterosexual path for life?

Thousands of kids who might have otherwise worked through their pubescent sexual identity issues will be inspired to accept the wrong choice based upon this unscientific, emotionally charged propaganda.

What’s brave or kind about telling thousands of sexually frustrated teens that they were Born This Way when a high percentage of them would have ended up taking the straight heterosexual path for life?

Please urge Office Depot to rescind their one million dollar pledge to Lady Gaga’s Born this Way Foundation.”

We’ll let you decide whether telling someone to “Be Brave,” “Be Kind,” or “Be Amazing” will alter their sexual orientation for years to come.

In the meantime, well done Office Depot!!

Caton is WAY off here. Would somebody please tell him that straight teens can't "choose" to become gay if they're not?

It seems that the conservative Christians still believe it's a choice to become gay. I tried for ten years to pray myself straight. I dated girls and even attempted suicide to get rid of my gay demon. Them I finally told someone I am gay. Then all the stress and pain left me and the demon was set free. The demon turned out to be the church and the southern baptists who were telling me I was living a sinful life. It seems that they forget god says a sin is a sin no matter what it is. They forget that the affair they had is a sin. The lottery tickets they scratch are a sin. The earrings and makeup and tatoos that they destroy the godlike body he gave us. Omg it goes on and on. The point is god knows who loves him and lives right by him in life. Treating others with respect and kindness will go a long way in the end. Will love to see the ones who chastised me when god scolds them for the way they treated me and others because of the way god made me/us. Love yourself.

Dr. Canton is missing the ENTIRE message behind the BTW foundation. Like anything else that has ties to the LGBT community, conservatives pick that sole issue out of the whole thing. The BTW foundation is sending a message to ALL kids, not just the gay ones, or those struggling with their sexuality. For someone with their doctorate, I am ashamed of your lack of research before "speaking", "Dr. B." The foundation focuses on efforts to stop bullying, which econmpases a lot more teens than just the gay ones. I don't know about you, "Dr." B., but when I was in school, anyone who wasn't popular, or didn't fit in with the "in" crowd was considered an outcast, and typically picked on, or bullied. I suppose you feel this behavior should continue, or should not be corrected? I love that we are currently in the midst of a civil rights "war." Businesses are "coming out"--pardon the pun--and voicing their support for equality, and diversity. Anyone who doesn't support this vision, quite frankly, is a moron.

what the heck is the "florida family association"? ive never heard of it

its almost as if they came up with this fake group and had it issue this ridiculous comment on purpose to come up with a meaningless controversey.

that aside, let me point out something:
bravery cannot be bought. self esteem doesnt come on a bracelet. the born this way foundation is nothing but a cynical profit-making venture diguised as such.
75% of the profits of these things are going to office depot.
25% are going to the BTW Foundation itself - for what? to help them develop more productz? maybe some pink post-its next round?
NONE of it is going to help LGBT or other at-risk youth in any kind of substantial way.

this entire thing is a consumerist farce.
