Lisa Lampanelli may have been fired on last night’s The Celebrity Apprentice, but not before winning $130,000 for Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), the nation's oldest HIV/AIDS care, prevention and advocacy provider!
More after the jump.
The hilarious, Lampanelli has been an LGBT ally for years. She put her money where her mouth is in 2011, when members of Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church, headed by Fred Phelps and known for its extreme anti-gay views, planned to protest Lampanelli's show because of her steadfast support of the LGBT community.
In response to the protest, Lampanelli pledged to donate $1,000 to GMHC for each protestor who showed up. She ultimately donated $50,000 and personally brought the check to GMHC headquarters.
Let your haters be your motivators, ya’ll!
Speaking on Lampanelli’s The Celebrity Apprentice charitable donation, Marjorie J. Hill, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of GMHC, says, “We are honored that Lisa chose GMHC as her charity. This year marks the 30th anniversary of GMHC and we could not be more pleased that Lisa worked hard to raise much-needed funds to support our care services for thousands of men, women and families affected by HIV/AIDS, our HIV prevention programs and advocacy efforts at all levels of government."
Hill continues, “We know that to end HIV/AIDS, we must also continue to address homophobia and stigma which are lethal drivers of this disease. We need more people like Lisa Lampanelli to help us by utilizing their creativity, talent, skills and generosity. While we are saddened that Lisa is no longer on 'The Celebrity Apprentice,' we are glad to have watched and cheered her on. She is one of our heroes."
Many props to Lisa! We want tix to her next show!
