We had high hopes for Matthew Mitcham to take gold in the 10m diving competition closing out the London Olympics this weekend (and not just because of his promise to dive naked). The guy's charming, a great international ambassador for the LGBT community and just plain talented. When things didn't quite work out the way we all had hoped on Saturday, gay diving fans across the world tossed on their Vera Wang veils and held memorials for what Matthew said would be the end of his career.
But according to an interview on his way out of London, it looks like we can put out the candles and start looking forward to Rio's Summer Games in four years because Matthew may very well not retire!
“Before coming to London, I’d pretty much decided that this was going to be my last Olympics. I was going to retire, just because of all the injuries and everything. I couldn’t see it getting any better, just how wearing 10m is on the body … but once I got here, all bets were off.
“The Olympics is just the most amazing experience and I never want to miss another one again. In no matter what capacity — whether it’s a diver, maybe just a springboard diver, or whether it’s media or anything, I’m definitely going to be in Rio, no matter what.”
We'd be happy with any of those options for the gorgeous Aussie, but we'd petition whatever Olympic network that picked him up as a reporter to demand in his contract that he only go on camera in his trademark Speedo. Anything else would be an affront to international viewers and should violate at least four treaties.
Lucky for us, it looks like we won't have to alert the United Nations to the possible upcoming war crime as Matthew is banking on returning in Rio as a springboard diver.
“I do have a history as a springboard diver, but I’ve never been solely a springboard diver. I’ve always been a platform diver and done springboard either to fill spots, or just because I was sort of semi-OK at it.
“But I have been in discussion with Chava my coach about the possibility of becoming solely a springboard diver … I’m not really going to take a holiday when I get home — I’m actually going to start working on the strength required to be a springboard diver straight away.
“It’s going to take a long time to get my thighs as big as [China's] He Chong’s.”
Matthew Mitcham back, better than ever and with bigger thighs in 2016? Sink your minds into that as we start a Kickstarter page to make this a reality.
