Another day, another trustworthy poll finds that the inevitable tide of change is in favor of love. Follow the jump for the statistics revealed in the latest poll from Pew Research with 85 percent less kumbaya sass from our fingertips...

The latest Pew poll finds that 47 percent of Americans support allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally, while 43 percent oppose equality. The numbers are up by 16 percent in favor in the eight years since 2004, while opposition is down 17 percent.

But Pew thinks the most telling numbers in its new poll are found in those who feel "strongly" about the way they answered the question. For the first time in a Pew Research Center survey there is as much strong support as strong opposition to gay marriage. In the current survey, 22% say they strongly support allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally; an identical percentage (22%) strongly opposes gay marriage. In 2008, there was about twice as much strong opposition to as strong support for gay marriage (30% vs. 14%).

In 2004, when the issue was widely thought to have increased turnout among socially conservative voters in several key states, 36% strongly opposed gay marriage while just 11% strongly favored it.

Going deeper, Pew Research found that Republican opposition to marriage  equality in general has dropped 10 percent, with those GOP who strongly oppose same-sex marriage plunging even further at 14 percent.
