New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has announced support for a marriage equality bill soon to come to the country's House of Representatives.
“My view has been that if two gay people want to get married then I can’t see why it would undermine my marriage to Bronag," Prime Minister Key said during a radio interview on Monday morning. “There will be plenty of people in our caucus who will be deeply opposed—particularly the very religious ones, and I can understand that.”
Previously, Key had personally endorsed marriage equality but didn't go as far as supporting government action extending the right to same-sex couples. Now he's open to a conscience vote (expected sometime this year in the New Zealand House).
“We first need to go and have the debates, I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about it. I’m going to give myself a little bit of room.”
Though polls show that a majority of Kiwis support marriage equality, the debate is expected to become heated among the country's lawmakers.
