Despite a hefty budget crisis looming, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has decided to prioritize a marriage equality initiative and has asked the state legislature to take up the issue before it breaks for summer in June. "We'll be working very hard to pass it," the governor told reporters on Wednesday.
It is unclear how marriage equality legislation will fare given the Republican-controlled Senate in the state, but a recent poll showing that for the first time a majority of New Yorkers support the right, activists are hopeful.
"This is legislation whose time has come," said Empire State Pride Agenda's executive director Ross D. Levi.
