Gov. Chris Christie isn't the only big-time politician speaking about marriage equality in more ambiguous terms than usual. On Thursday night, President Obama hinted at an evolution on the social issue by opposing efforts seeking to repeal New Hampshire's marriage equality law. Details follow.

Has he evolved?

“While the president does not weigh in on every single action taken by legislative bodies in our country, the record is clear that the president has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same-sex couples,” said White House spokesperson Shin Inouye in a statement to the Washington Blade. “The president believes strongly in stopping laws designed to take rights away.”

Do you think President Obama will make it clear that he supports marriage equality following the November elections?

Laws designed to deny rights from people who are not being harmful or destructive to anyone else in any (rational) way, is a waste of taxpayer time and money.

MAKE US SOME JOBS G'DAMIT!

I disagree with the previous post comment. Obama supporting an anti-repeal of Gay marriage is NOT an example of him trying to please the masses. If he wanted to please the masses for re-election he would have been more cowardly and just avoided the issue all together! He's kind of making a ballsy statement.

You will get real change if the Republicans win the White House. You will lose any vestige of the safety net (Medicare, Medicaid, parts of Social Security). See how much you like that change.

No change?! Are you kidding me? DADT was repealed thts a huge step to equality, and Obama wouldn't push that for just votes in the middle of his term, he has made great improvements, just look at where gas prices WAS when Bush left and where it is NOW, a basic $1.20 difference

I think the president is willing to change his mind; which means he is human.

I think he has evolved, and will evolve on this issue come November.

Obama was pro gay marriage his entire political career until he ran for president. Now he's kinda level. It's a political strategy to please both crowds, but does not show his real views. He IS pro-gay.

Just because he personally does not agree with gay marriage does not mean he feels it is right to take away someone else's right, or to discriminate against a group of individuals. That mind set is separating his religious views from his job as an electoral official. he seems to understand his personal religious views on the matter have no place in the making of a law when it infringes on another persons rights and liberties. Yes he has said ha doesn't believe in gay marriage personally, but he does support gay rights. I say go obama.

Oh it is so dramatic. Every single country in the world has this problem. Gay marriage will never be accepted by everyone unless,, no, not even then.. Be thankful for the matter being publically addressed and that things are getting better one country at a time. Don't demand 'change' if the change that is happening (public figures speaking openly about this) is being criticized. Say thanks for living in a country where you won't be crucified for uttering the word 'Gay'.. Remember, gays are the special kind of homemade jam not everyone will like,,, NOT the strawberry jam!

Some people are so ignorant, especially gay individuals who chose to vote Republican because they believe in "smaller government", "less taxes" and "fiscal responsibility." Bush was about none of those ideals. Suze Orman said it best: "My social issue affects my financial issue." Now wake the Hell up, LGBT "Republicans"! Obama has made great strides in the progression of legal acceptance of GLBT Americans, greater than ANY president before him. He has been outspoken on the issue for a very long time! Just because the man said several years ago that he does not support gay marriage does not mean that is so! Jesus Christ...look at his actions and his intentions to figure out his true stance on the issue. It is unfortunate that he never said that he supports gay marriage, but let's be real people...in politics, you don't go putting out your entire hand in the game for everyone to see! It is sad and pathetic to think anything other than the truth...and even more pathetic if you believe EVERYTHING someone says. Get a life...or before you know it, the Republicans you put into off will only allow the people to vote on how you can live it! Obama 2012.

i think he faces a difficult issue where common secular national legal and moral culture defines discrimination as unacceptable and a slippery slope that then fosters racism and racial segregation. i think as much as it may upset the crazy's and give fuel the the right wing gun slinging xenophobic cults its the only way to secure the country's economy to provide reform laws to better regulate a more focused morality of consumer protection against extremist special interest groups.
if marriage is only a church thing then it needs all tax benefits removed from it immediately and all churches need to have tax exemptions removed also.
