Mitt Romney, an opponent of marriage equality, has hired Richard Grenell, an openly gay man, as his national security and foreign policy spokesman.
And for Grenell the backlash has already begun.
More after the jump.
Metro Weekly reports that Grenell served as the spokesman for the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the George W. Bush administration. He came out publicly as he left his post.
Grenell and his partner, Matt Lashey, have been together nearly 10 years and currently reside in California.
R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of gay GOP group Log Cabin Republicans, believes Grenell will be “a tremendous asset” to the Romney campaign.
He says, “Having served with Ric, I can attest that his experience in the multi-lateral environment of the UN and familiarity with domestic and internal media make Ric a strong voice.”
Of course, this reentry into the spotlight doesn’t come without consequences. Grenell has quickly come under fire for what are being called sexist tweets, targeting women ranging from Rachel Maddow to Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.
Those tweets (and the spelling errors are all his own) include:
“rachel maddow needs to take a breath and put on a necklace”
“Hillary is starting to look liek madeline Albright”
He also made a reference to Michelle Obama “sweating on the East Room carpet," which has since been removed.
Grenell apologized, like you do when you get a new high-profile job and it’s suddenly clear that you’ve been a public asshat, saying: “my tweets were written to be tongue-in-cheek and humorous but I can now see how they can also be hurtful. I didn’t mean them that way and will remove them from twitter. I apologize for any hurt they caused.”
Congrats on the new gig, Richard. We may not approve of Mitt’s stance on marriage equality, but go ahead and do you!
That said, talk smack about Rachel, Hillz, or Michelle Obama again and you may be kicked out of our club—and you know what means: “You can’t sit with us!”
