Those poor, hardworking souls who were pink slipped without warning by Out editor in chief Aaron Hicklin have another chance to rejoin Here Media: if they're not selected for the alleged freelance work Hicklin has been so proud to offer, maybe they can reclaim their editorial gigs by landing one of Out's just-listed unpaid internships. Details follow.

An Instinct reader has tipped us to Here Media's "help wanted" page that includes a bevy of new internship listings. The timing for these new uncompensated gigs is of note because, as you all surely know by now, Out Magazine eviscerated its entire editorial department in a massive lay-off deemed a "restructuring."

From Here Media's Career's web page:

INTERNSHIP POSITIONS DESCRIPTION

Here Media offers qualified, college-level students the opportunity to participate in quarterly, uncompensated internships available in our offices in Los Angeles and New York City. In general, most internships last for 3 months, at 10-16 hours per week. See basic internship descriptions and locations below. To apply for internships, follow the general instructions at the top of the page.

INTERNSHIP -- EDITORIAL DEPARTMENT, OUT MAGAZINE, NEW YORK

The most qualified applicants will be students with a career focus in journalism and new media, with interest and skills in the print and digital medium.

Interns will have the opportunity to sit-in on weekly brainstorming meetings, participate in a major website redesign, and work directly with experienced writers and editors. Interns will be asked to pitch, write, and edit stories and blog posts as well as assist with updating and maintaining the site. Interns will also be asked to help create video content such as celebrity, fashion and music interviews.

Intern Requirements: High-energy results-oriented personality; superior organization with attention to detail and ability to prioritize; strong work ethic; excellent communication skills both oral and written; strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint; excellent time management skills; passion for creativity and team work; passion for new media

So, firing your paid and talented staff and replacing them with unpaid interns? This is your idea of "restructuring," Hicklin and Here Media co.?

The shade of it all.

There's no surprise there. That's disgusting.

How can they get away with something like that? It's just so crazy and unfair to those writers, to all writers. Hope they find no interns at all.

Let's not pretend, though. Every single industry in America is leaning this way. Why pay people to work when some poor schmuck will do it for free?

You haven't mentioned the reason for these lay-offs is the impending court trial for fraud, set for September. Bank of America is suing Here Media for $98 million fraud. Also, more staff was laid-off at that company in addition to Out staff recently. Also, why don't you go dig up one of the many film makers who were never paid for their films? This company has long record history of not paying anyone. Remember all the Advocate writers/photographers that quit because none of their invoices were paid for months?

Hate to rain on the well, hate fest, but I check their job postings regularly, and those Intern postings have been up for a long time. I'm guessing because they rotate in and out each semester. But two of the full-time listings are new since the last time I checked. Though I bet now that you posted this, they will quickly clean up the jobs page! smilies/smiley.gif

Hmmmm.....Trash talking and facts based information have totally different definitions my dear Toby! That is true journalism! Obtaining and dissemminating the information to our LGBT community is priceless and valuable as historically our community has been screwed up all to often. Kudos to Instinct! Please continue doing an excellent journalistic work!
