Romney Calls Hospital Visitation For Same-Sex Couples 'Benefits' Not Civil Rights PDF Print

romney amendment

Just in case there was any confusion, Mitt Romney is still very much in favor of a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

He also doesn't consider pesky things like, oh, being able to visit your same-sex partner in the hospital to be civil rights. Those are "benefits" and according to Romney they should be determined by the states.

Awesome. Details after the jump.

Bay Buchanan, Romney's campaign senior advisor issued a statement to BuzzFeed on Oct. 20, writing, "Governor Romney supports a federal marriage amendment to the Constitution that defines marriage as an institution between a man and a woman. Governor Romney also believes, consistent with the 10th Amendment, that it should be left to states to decide whether to grant same-sex couples certain benefits, such as hospital visitation rights and the ability to adopt children. I referred to the Tenth Amendment only when speaking about these kinds of benefits – not marriage."

Doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy?

It's great to see a candidate so intent on promoting the interests of our community.

Oh wait, there actually is someone running for President that actually wants to do that. (Hint: he's currently in office.)

I've already voted for the President (it felt great).

Polls are silly at this point of the election in 2012.

Get out there and vote, regardless what any silly polls tell you.... ya hear?

i have been a nurse for 24 years. this is what i have to say about the initiatives proffered by former governor romney: 1.) visiting a same sex partner is not a privilege; it should go without question or censure from government of any type, hospital administrations or anyone else. 2.) allowing the states to determine whether same gender partners should be allowed to visit reinforces the isolation for which the republican party has become an emblem. 3.) it is no state's or federal government's right to determine who i designate as my family. 4.)family members, i.e support systems, are often integrated into the care plans of patients in a hospital and are instrumental in their recoveries. you are a victim of your biases. this issue is much wider than hetero/homosexuality. how you explain it to yourselves or your constituencies is not the concern of those being governed. if you cannot consider the inherent diversity in the population you intend to govern, then you should not be allowed to govern them.
