That petition we pointed you to yesterday asking Sesame Street to show support for marriage equality by having long-rumored couple Bert & Ernie tie the knot has caught the attention of the show, which has not only responded to the request, but in the process has once and for all made the sexuality of the famous pair official.

So, what does Sesame Street finally have to say about all things gay surrounding the lovable duo?

Written today on Sesame Street'Facebook page:

"Bert and Ernie are best friends.  They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics...they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

Hmmm. That's funny because Sesame Street has no problem allowing its "heterosexual" puppet stars to flaunt their sexual orientation (the Count and the Countess, for example).

How do you feel about Sesame Street's response and the long awaited official denial that Bert & Ernie might be a gay couple?

Come on CTW... whether they publicly come out or not, everyone knows they are gay. In this world we live in today, even my small nieces and nephews ask questions about this. I tried to tell them that as far as we know, they are not gay. They responded that they looked like a gay couple. I asked them if they cared and they said, "no, but if they are they should just be themselves." THAT to me is the best lesson "Sesame Street" could teach.

Sorry, going with the producers on this one, they're frickin' puppets, they don't have an sexual orientation.

I know one thing, if Sesame Street said 'yes they're gay', I'll guarantee you the Republican lead Congress would be in arms wanting to defund more public television

When I was a kid, I never thought these two were gay. They entertained me and my classmates right before nap time. I learned the rubber duckie song and doing the pidgin. Ernie would irritate the HELL out of Bert and we would laugh cause it was funny. They were roommates (not in code form) and best friends. I knew that when I was 4 y/o. To EVEN think they're a closeted gay couple is so stupid. Only grown ups would look into it MORE than it really is. And ONLY the GLBT would take this issue to heart cause we 'feel' we need all the "help" we can get, even from puppets. This "issue" is stupid and needs to go away along with every other kiddie show gay rumor.
