Should it matter that a teacher once had a career in porn? What if he still did? Miami-Dade County Public Schools seems to think so. Get the details and weigh in after the jump.
Shawn Loftis, a teacher who earned their master's degree and has even had his (non-porn) content featured on CNN, has been fired from teaching K-12 math in Miami-Dade County.
Miami New Times reports that, "this past January, Loftis was informed he had been suspended. Another employee had told Nautilus principal Allyn Bernstein, she wrote, that Loftis 'had his own personal gay website.'"
Also, in April, despite explaining that he was no longer doing porn, the Florida Department of Education revoked Loftis's teaching certification.
Despite pointing out the legality of his former career, it was noted that the school district had a code that required faculty to "conduct themselves, both in their employment and in the community, in a manner that will reflect credit upon themselves and the school system." Specifics might have been helpful.
Loftis sought help from ACLU, but was turned down, writing, "Your case would be stronger if your job did not involve supervising children."
MNT adds that he is now back in porn. Make that dolla, hunty.
What's your Instinct should someone be fired from teaching youth because of a porn past? And where does it end? Should people be fired for having XTube videos, or ManHunt accounts?
