A day that signified progress and a step into the 20th Century (not a typo) for Southern Baptists had to be marred by the passage of a nasty homophobic resolution.
Thousands of delegates at the Southern Baptist Convention in New Orleans on Wednesday made history by electing the denomination's first African American president.
But hold your applause.
Delegates also nearly unanimously voted in favor of a resolution that affirms their belief in “the exclusive union of one man and one woman” and that “all sexual behavior outside of marriage is sinful.”
NY Daily News provides a few more details:
The resolution acknowledges that gays and lesbians sometimes experience “unique struggles” but declares that they lack the “distinguishing features of classes entitled to special protections.”
“It is regrettable that homosexual rights activists and those who are promoting the recognition of ‘same-sex marriage’ have misappropriated the rhetoric of the Civil Rights Movement,” the resolution states.
How conveniently un-Christian of the delegates to overlook the countless deaths attributed to the LGBT struggle for equality that has so paralleled the fight to the Civil Rights Movement of the past mid-century.
