Did the Texas GOP discover a time machine?

Wait. Nope.

That level of a breakthrough demands some trace of modern intelligence.

Instead—according to its just-released 2012 platform—the Texas Republican Party is partying like its 1959 and has laid the foundation for an all-out war on civil rights.

A big chunk of the platform includes opposition to every civil rights issue of the day:

Family and Defense of Marriage ― We support the definition of marriage as a God-ordained, legal and moral commitment only between a natural man and a natural woman, which is the foundational unit of a healthy society, and we oppose the assault on marriage by judicial activists. We call on the President and Congress to take immediate action to defend the sanctity of marriage. We are resolute that Congress exercise authority under the United States Constitution, and pass legislation withholding jurisdiction from the Federal Courts in cases involving family law, especially any changes in the definition of marriage.

We further call on Congress to pass and the state legislatures to ratify a marriage amendment declaring that marriage in the United States shall consist of and be recognized only as the union of a natural man and a natural woman. Neither the United States nor any state shall recognize or grant to any unmarried person the legal rights or status of a spouse. We oppose the recognition of and granting of benefits to people who represent themselves as domestic partners without being legally married.

We advocate the repeal of laws that place an unfair tax burden on families. We call upon Congress to completely remove the marriage penalty in the tax code, whereby a married couple receives a smaller standard deduction than their unmarried counterparts living together. The primary family unit consists of those related by blood, heterosexual marriage, or adoption. The family is responsible for its own welfare, education, moral training, conduct, and property.

Judicial Activism in Marriage ― We support marriage and oppose the assault on marriage by judicial activists.

Enforcement of the Defense of Marriage Act ― We support the enforcement of the State and Federal Defense of Marriage Act by state and federal officials respectively, and oppose creation, recognition and benefits for partnerships outside of marriage that are being provided by some political subdivisions.

Marriage and Divorce - We believe in the sanctity of marriage and that the integrity of this institution should be protected at all levels of government. We urge the Legislature to rescind no-fault divorce laws. We support Covenant Marriage.

Family Values ― We support the affirmation of traditional Judeo-Christian family values and oppose the continued assault on those values.

Homosexuality ― We affirm that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit. Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God, recognized by our country’s founders, and shared by the majority of Texans. Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable “alternative” lifestyle, in public policy, nor should “family” be redefined to include homosexual “couples.” We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin. Additionally, we oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction or belief in traditional values.

Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) - We oppose this act through which the federal government would coerce religious business owners and employees to violate their own beliefs and principles by affirming what they consider to be sinful and sexually immoral behavior.

This political platform is so filled with a nitpicked extremist interpretation and references to the Bible that it could've been written by the Westboro Clan themselves.

So essentially their platforms says that if you're not a straight, rich, white, married, Christian, the Texas GOP wants nothing to do with you. Sounds like that big old GOP tent they used to talk about just became a blue 10 x 10 tarp from Walmart.

"The family is responsible for its own welfare, education, moral training, conduct, and property."

So long as your family looks like our family - otherwise, screw that.

Their statement, " "Additionally, we oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction or belief in traditional values." " Isn't this criminal incitement??

I cannot believe that I used to be a Republican. How can there be so much hate in a state that considers itself Christian? This is not the Christianity that I was taught about and grew up with!!

I'm a Texan and a gay man. My partner and I will celebrate 29 years together this year. I'm a practicing Lutheran in a church that is a reconciled congregation. Regardless, several things are wrong with this GOP platform. A couple of these are: 1) Using God in the attempt to drive politics is wrong. I think God would agree, but no one truly knows God's mind. 2) There is a serious delta between gays wanting to get married (which would only increase more conservative behavior in my opinion) and heterosexual couples who are unfaithful, divorced, single, etc. You can't focus on part of the marriage picture; you have to look at the whole thing.

This is soooo totally absurd. I think it's just a group of ignorant people so totally scared that their son or daughter might one day think it's okay to state that he/she is gay and this must never be allowed to happen. Why the shame and embarrassment would be too much for them to handle. I can see how easy it would be for heterosexuals to jump on this bandwagon.

please think of this group as Texas Republicans and don't include all Texans in any hate comments. I'm a Texan but very much not a republican. we're doing everything we can to oppose this kind of bullshit. please don't write off the entire state. parts of it are incredible and open and forward-thinking. just not the red parts. every place has its own morons to deal with.

I used to proudly say that Texas was a great place to be from but glad I don't live there anymore. Now I am even ashamed to tell people that I am from Texas.

Please don't think that every republican in Texas is like this. There are plenty of us who do not agree with this. Using articles like this to paint an entire state and its people in a negative light is wrong and shows an abundance of group think. There are people like this, but there are more than are not. Use your brains and stop believing that the lowest common denominator is who I am. I don't believe that every black American stands shoulder to shoulder with Jesse Jackson, just as you shouldn't believe I stand shoulder to shoulder with these people.
