Missouri's despicable "Don't Say Gay" bill has brought the closet door swinging open for Rep. Zachary Wyatt, who announced that he is gay at a press conference designed to oppose the homophobic legislation.
Wyatt came out on Wednesday morning in Jefferson City as he asked the legislature to withdrawal the state's pending "Don't Say Gay" bill. After announcing that he is gay, Wyatt went on to add amendments to an anti-bullying bill up for debate in the state and admitted that homophobic jokes and snickering around the Capitol prompted him to come out of the closet.
"We are incredibly proud of Representative Wyatt's courage today," says A.J. Bockelman, Executive Director of PROMO, a Missouri LGBT organization. "We hope this announcement should serve as a positive example not only for the LGBT community, but also for Representative Wyatt's colleagues. We truly hope the announcement will be met with support from his colleagues and friends from both sides of the aisle and respect his decision to be true to his identity and self."
According to Vital Voice, the announcement makes Rep. Wyatt the only openly gay GOP state office holder currently serving in the United States.
