The future of legislation designed to block Omaha's attempt at protecting its LGBT citizens from discrimination doesn't look bright in the Nebraska legislature.

Judiciary Committee Chairman State Sen. Brad Ashford (Omaha) said during yesterday's hearing on the proposed state ban of local protections ordinances that he does not believe the panel will move forward with the anti-gay legislation.

Introduce by state Senator Beau McCoy, the state-level law seeks to block local municipalities from protecting the LGBT community in the areas of employment and service/hospitality. It will be debated today by the Nebraska Legislature's Judiciary Committee.

Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray can't help but take McCoy's proposed legislation personally as he's introduced anti-discrimination efforts in his city. “The timing is suspicious, first of all,” said Gray. “Secondly, there are some issue that are more unique to Omaha than the rest of the state. We need the flexibility and latitude [to pass local ordinances], and it's getting kind of frustrating that the Legislature keep trying to micromanage the city.”
