Urban Outfitters And Its Shadow Conservatism PDF Print
Written by Robbie Daw | Wednesday, 21 May 2008

A pal sent along this article from the U.K. on Urban Outfitters' president, Richard Hayne, who in the past has apparently donated cash to such Republican campaigns as that of anti-gay former Pennsylvania Senator, Rick Santorum.

Interestingly, in 2004 -- a big election year wherein youth were urged to vote -- Urban Outfitters sold a T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan "Voting Is For Old People." Guess those old people thought Santorum sucked, too, because he lost out on being re-elected in November 2006 to Democrat Bob Casey, Jr.

A little online digging reveals that student group Dances With Kittens staged a protest outside a Santa Cruz, California store in 2005.

This is the text on the flier the group handed out to bypassers:

Boycott Urban Outfitters!!!

The president of Urban Outfitters gives money to the Republican Party and right-wing senator Rick Santorum. Santorum is one of the most conservative members of the entire US Senate. He has made harsh remarks towards homosexuals. So, by buying from Urban Outfitters you are giving $ to support homophobic causes.

Another reason not to support Urban Outfitters is because of the shirt they sold for a while that said, "Voting is for Old People"! The goal of the shirt is obviously to suppress the youth vote and disenfranchise young people.

All we ask is that you examine the facts and choose to not buy any products from any Urban Outfitters unitl they stop giving money to discrimination and spreading the wrong message. There are plenty of other great places to shop.

Join us in boycotting Urban Outfitters!

And yet, here are some of the shirts the $700 million empire has sold over the years, obviously cashing in on its gay (or at least gay-friendly or ironic) clientele:

Another reason not to shop Urban Outfitters is that its cloths are overpriced downscale crap.

DOLCE & GABBANA FUCKING ROCK!!!!!!

Who is going to buy clothes from a place called Urban Outshitters anyway? And know that I know that they are nowhere near out, forget it altogether. There's one on the corner of Broadway and 72nd. I'm going to spit on it now.

So it would be cool to shop there if the president was a bleeding liberal who supported abortion clinics and donated to Charles' Rangels campaign?! Why does it matter what he supports or doesnt, this is America you forget?! It's only wrong when they support conservative causes I guess...and of course it was a bunch of kids who feel like they are "contributing" to society and think it's cool by protesting at the store.

No BC - yes it matters of course. If I will be spending my money I want to make sure that my money isnot going to somebody who will use it against me - is that hard to understand.

Exactly BC - this is America! And one of the main points of the free market system is to give consumers the power to hurt companies who sell faulty products or are otherwise dissatisfying. In other words, it is the responsibility of all us "kids" to spread awareness about the dealings of Urban Outfitter's CEO, as it is contrary to the image they project. I was one of their customers, as well as an avid fighter of Proposition 8. I didn't find out until recently that my money was supporting the legislation I was so completely against (as someone who is gay with every intention of getting married.) The way this company is spending their money is irresponsible, dishonest and backwards. A conservative who shopped at, say, Suburban Outfitters, would be outraged to fid that its CEO contributed their earnings to Pro-Choice efforts.

So basically, Richard Hayne sucks. Don't shop at Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, OR Free People!

But he hired a gay CEO so he must not be too anti-gay.
