While it's certainly applause-worthy that USA Network is ready to kick-off its second "Character's Unite" month, a "multi-platform effort to shine a spotlight on the importance of stopping intolerance and hate," the decision to celebrate a coach who moonlights as a vehement anti-gay activist is confusing, to say the least. Details follow.
USA "will premiere original programming and PSAs, unveil new digital content and expand its community outreach efforts to inspire more Americans to come together to promote greater tolerance, respect and acceptance" when "Character's Unite" month kicks of in February. Sounds great, right? However, the inclusion of a documentary "profiling NFL greats" like Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy contradicts the commendable message entirely.
Why? Dungy has helped raise money for the Focus on the Family-affiliated Indiana Family Institute at an event in which he said gays and their families were not on "the Lord's side."
Yet USA Network is championing Dungy to promote greater tolerance, respect and acceptance by airing NFL Character's Unite documentary as part of its anti-hate programming?
Mixed messages, much?
