Consulting her crystal rock formations in her "Land of Enchantment" (aka New Mexico), Shirley MacLaine believes she has figured out what makes people gay. An extra dose of quirk after the jump.

The Village Voice's Michael Musto points out some revelations that Shirley had in her latest book, I'm Over All That—And Other Confessions. And here is her explanation:

"One of the explanations for homosexuality and transgenderism could, I believe, be a profound identification with a recent incarnation as a member of the opposite sex.

"I believe each one of us has had both male and female lifetimes.

"As we make our soul's journey through time, I think resistance to reincarnational understanding is because we feel threatened by our sexual identity.

"We just don't like to contemplate seriously that we might have been a member of the opposite sex in a previous incarnation.

"Questions of sex and the spiritual understanding of the soul are intertwined."

We know you mean well, but WTF?! Transgender people and gay people are NOT the same thing. Gender identity and sexual orientation are NOT the same thing. And having a drink and drinking the whole bottle are NOT the same thing. Come down, Shirley, come down!

perhaps shirley wasn't being specific enough for you, stickler that you are. even so, her basic idea is good. but most of my recent lifetimes could be male and yet i could still manifest very strong female characteristics and homosexual or bisexual tendencies, influenced by female lifetimes that i lived ages ago.for example i could have lived amazon lifetimes thousands of years ago and i could have been a bene jesserit millions of years ago and the valences of those personalities could still be affecting me and my behavior.
