After you’re done scrubbing the makeup off your face on the morning of Nov. 1, be sure and get in one more clean shave because November is all about the ‘stache! Find out why guys around the globe are putting down their razors for a month—and get involved yourself—after the jump!
The worldwide charity movement Movember is back and bigger than ever this year, and it all kicks off Nov. 1! And while there are plenty of fantastic organizations out there who ask the public to walk, run or dance in the name of raising awareness and funds for cancer research, Movember wants guys (and girls) to do one simple thing—grow a mustache!
As the organization proudly says, the mustache becomes a hairy ribbon for men’s health, specifically men’s cancers. The scary reality is that 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime; 1 in 6 with prostate cancer. And unfortunately the men’s health movement is way behind that of women’s health, with too many men embarrassed to talk about such cancers.
So, since 2003, the Movember movement has been on a mission to change that public dialogue. The idea is that the growth of a new mustache can spark hundreds of conversations about the seemingly taboo topics of men’s health and prostate cancer. But because we all like a little competition, the Movember movement added a fundraising component, with the global Movember movement raising $81 million (U.S. dollars) last year for select cancer organizations around the world. Here at home, some 65,000 facial hair friends helped raise $7.5 million for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG organization in 2010.
Are you down to rock a ‘stache for 30 days this November and help bring attention to this important cause? Signing up is super easy! Just register at Movember.com by Nov. 1. Then you’ll have access to your personalized Mo Space page on Movember.com. Use pre-loaded e-mail, Facebook and Twitter messaging from your Mo Space, recruit friends and family to either join your Movember team or donate to your moustache growing efforts.
On Movember 1st, Mo Bros (Movember participants) start clean-shaven then grow and groom their mustache all month long. Update your Mo Space with pictures, videos and status updates of your progress to supplement your fundraising outreach throughout November and then celebrate at the end of Movember with the Movember community at an official Gala Parté, where you have the chance to dress up in your best Movember costume, showcase your immaculate grooming, celebrate your finest Mo and compete for a number of category titles—including Best Mo in Character, Lamest Mo, Miss Movember and Man of Movember.
And we, of course, want to encourage our Movember Instincters as well. So once you're registered, e-mail us your official Mo Space link to
