New York Times food critic Frank Bruni has an interesting observation in today's paper: lean California cuisine is out. New Yorkers are finding themselves in the middle of a globby, goopy fatty food explosion at high-end restaurants:
The menu at Momofuku, which also opened last year and seems to
capture the culinary zeitgeist as well as any restaurant, has not only
sweetbreads — the gateway offal — but also a veal head terrine that
resembles a gelatinous amalgam of everything your mother ever told you
to trim from a chop and shove to the side of your plate. That same
description applies to a terrine of oxtail and pig’s foot at Trestle on
Tenth.
Trestle and Momofuku would be high on the health
commissioner’s list, but probably no higher than the new restaurant
Resto, where some genius — and I am most certainly not being facetious
— decided that deviled eggs aren’t sufficiently rich on their own. No,
they need amplification, and of course they need meat, so they’re
placed on rectangles of pork jowl. One more thing: these rectangles are
deep-fried. At a certain point, I suppose, there’s no turning back.
We wonder how many Chelsea queens or Hell's Kitchen homos are part of this fatty new wave?

A quick scour of the blogosphere today:
- In Dallas' mayoral runoff Saturday, Ed Oakley (an openly gay candidate) will face off against Tom Leppert. Should Oakley win, he will be the most high-profile gay mayor in America. (Dallas in fact already has an openly lesbian sherriff, and a slew of other LGBT officials.)
- In Brazil, Sao Paulo's pride celebration drew over three million people. And one murder.
- And, as a morning treat, here's a leaked camera-phone video starring one of the French rugby boys from the Dieux du Stade calendar. (Last time we were naked in front of that many people...oh wait, there was a camera then, too.)

Totally hunky, totally out superstar designer Tom Ford unveiled plans late last week to expand his own fashion line into a worldwide mega brand, with over 100 Tom Ford stores opening up internationally over the next 10 years.
Milan, London, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Moscow are just some of the places where the boutiques, either wholly-owned or franchise-operated, are expected to open in the next few years. Plus, Ford's line will be carried in Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, as well as in other international luxury department stores from Brazil to Japan.
Ford launched his flagship store on NYC's Madison Avenue in April this year; it got a ton of press for its supposed attention to customer service and its exclusive attitude - including in-house butler and maid service - but was criticized in a big way by the New York Times.

After 90 minutes of calm debate that saw all Republicans (and two Democrats) siding against it, San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno's gay marriage bill - similar to the one he introduced in 2005 - passed the California Assembly 42-34 late Tuesday.
If the bill does pass the Senate, which it did in 2005, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has already stated he would veto it a second time.
When the California legislature OK'd gay marriage in 2005, it became the first state in the nation to do so without any sort of court mandate.
Did Californians realize, when they elected him, that the Terminator would wind up being the only thing that stood between them and gay marriage?
OH, and also: Paris Hilton isn't in jail anymore.

Funny face aside, it's clear Mr. G has been working out. Yum! Hot treasure trail, Jake! Further evidence that manscaping is so overrated.
Rumors have been flying that he and Reese (who are an item) may be expecting, since they've both been seen leaving the doctor together several times in as many weeks. Image and story via WOW Report.
Also: On the subject of hottie straight celebs who pander to the gays, over the weekend Enrique Iglesias played London's huge club G-A-Y...and at the part of his set where he would normally take a girl on stage for the song "Hero," he serenaded a boy instead, complete with a touchy-feely moment at the end. Video here! (It's actually kinda hot!)
