You know you’ve been there. You’ve got some swank evening party to go to—but the weather outside is smoldering. Step things up in a blazer and button up and soon you’ll be sweating up a storm. Go a more casual and weather-appropriate route and you run the risk of looking too underdressed. It’s fashion despair.
Fear not my friends. The following is my guide to some of the coolest evening looks for the hot summer sun. Pay attention and you’ll be well on your way to standing out in the crowd without looking like the beautiful boys above. Here we go...
BRING POLO TO THE PARTY
It’s a simple move but it gives major look. Instead of wearing a starched-up button-up under your summer suit, try rocking a slim fit cotton polo instead. Not only will you shed a lot of weight and stuffiness, but you’ll take your fit to a much more youthful and contemporary place. Look for suits that are narrow, preferably in one or two button varieties and with no or half lining. Never tuck the polo and go for loafers with either no socks or socks that match your polo for an irreverent yet totally sexy evening option. Try Theory or Marshall Artist for some cool and slim polos.
SASHAY CHAMBRAY
There are few things more current than the chambray shirt. The light weight cousin to the denim shirt (which works for this look too if you’re not in a super hot area) is the perfect option to bust out for an evening cocktail party. Like the gent above, pair your breezy blue with some navy chino’s, no belt and a pair of brown slip ons. Need something a bit more blingy? Rock it out with black slacks, polished black ankle boots and a black bowtie. Look for options with classic detail stitching like this denim from Diesel or in short sleeve (try GSTAR). Loving this Universal Works Chambray, too!
TAKE A VESTED INTEREST
Also known as the waistcoat, the vest is probably the most versatile of men’s garments. Whether you sport it like the hottie above—paired with its suit bottoms—or go for a more casual look contrasting the vest to a pair of chinos or even jeans, a vest always adds some bang to what you’re bringing. Keep the vest length just above your waist and throw on a belt that’s hot enough to show off a bit. This look is absolutely perfect for those hot summer nights as it allows you that sophisticated polished feel without the bulk and bother of a full suit. Find affordable options at Topman or throw down big time for this rad option from DSQUARED2.
THE DARK KNIGHT
This one is for the rock n’ rollers among you. You know, those who dare not wear a tie unless attending a funeral or laying in that cedar box themselves. But DARK is the spirit of this little number, trumping formality and structure with mystery and style. A few important things to keep in mind: If you go with a T-shirt, it must be of high quality and have all of its pigment. Your slacks should be slim fit and plain front and carry the same hue as your shirt. Feel free to mix things up with your accessories. I favor wearing chocolate brown shoes and belts when in all black. Yes, you can wear brown with black—and I also quite enjoy this gentleman's necklace. One statement accessory is all you need. If you’re a blind mouse like me, rock your extra bold frames for a bit of added structure to this free-form shadow. Try James Perse for a T-shirt you will want to keep for the rest of your life and hit up the Gap—yes, the Gap!—for perfectly trim trousers.
