Name: Carabosse Comics
Owners: Lynx Delirium & David Paul Brown
Established: 2004
Contact: carabossecomics.com

INSTINCT: How did you two meet?
LYNX DELIRIUM: We met the same way that Carabosse characters Che and Dimitri first met. The story “Love At First Sight,” which shows how they met, is available both in the Che: Ashcan made exclusively for Prism Comics and as a backup story in Tommy Roddy’s Pride High #5. Just substitute me for Che and David for Dimitri.

What inspired you two to start the company?
LYNX: I was really interested in self-publishing my comics after seeing how rewarding it could be. Having control over everything is great.
DAVID PAUL BROWN: It was also a good opportunity for me—who has no artistic talent—to become involved in that world, and a way to help Lynx get his stuff out there.

So what’s the best do-it-yourself benefit?
LYNX: Creative freedom! I’ve had my work censored so much through other projects and websites and companies, and now I don’t have to edit my art to be what someone else thinks it should be. I can write or draw whatever I want! In turn, hopefully, that means my work won’t be stereotypical. It’s not just superhero comics, like the larger corporations might focus on, but a lot of different genres and viewpoints.
DAVID: We keep the rights to all of our work. Being your own boss and being fully in charge of the projects is pretty fulfilling.

What’s the best thing about working together?
DAVID: Ours is a good complementary relationship: Lynx has the creative sense, and I’m good at all those business tasks. Watching Lynx create helps inspire me to want to learn more of the creative side myself.
LYNX: I get inspired at any random time, and I love being able to turn around and have David there to bounce ideas off of in the middle of the night and such. Half the time, though, we already know what the other is thinking. And that’s also special because you feel validated.

What’s your advice for other guys who want to start a biz with the BF?
DAVID: Make sure you have patience, because being in a close personal relationship and working together can put a strain on things—everyone needs some space from time to time. Also, make sure you cover all aspects of the business. For instance: Lynx does the creating, art and story, and I can give input with proofreading and covering the business side.

What does Carabosse Comics offer?
LYNX: Fantasy! I’m a fantasy buff, so I love writing about things that are otherworldly or odd and off the wall! Carabosse is pretty diverse—we have angels, furries, gargoyles, spider-women and all kinds of fun and crazy stuff! Oh, and, of course, cute guys, too!
DAVID: It’s a wide range of fun characters and stories that appeal to everyone.

What are some of your current projects?
LYNX: Last year, Carabosse acquired the rights to the gay-comic anthology Queerbait, and I’m currently editing further issues of that book. It has some great stories with GLBT themes by various comic creators. Personally, I’m also creating the Carabosse Comics Universe, where all my characters exist within the same continuity. The main book within that is Che, which follows a gay couple after they have tragically died.
DAVID: Next year is also the fifth anniversary of our first book, The Goth Queen Needs A Mate, and you can bet we’ll be celebrating that as well.

How does it feel to not only have built this company, but to have built it together?
DAVID: Happy and proud.
LYNX: I can’t imagine Carabosse Comics without David. My characters are like my children. David and I are like proud parents!
