 Too Cool For School
This summer, ASHLEY TISDALE Reprises Her Role As Sharpay Evans, Disney Channel’s Sweetest Bad Girl, In High School Musical 2.
The true sign that Ashley Tisdale became our favorite guilty pleasure last year is that—in addition to buying each of the various High School Musical DVDs available, picking up her dance-pop album Headstrong and going to see her shake it in a short skirt on the HSM tour—we secretly spent valuable work hours watching dozens of Suite Life Of Zack And Cody clips on YouTube when we should’ve been hard at work on the latest issue of Instinct!
Luckily, the powers that be let us steal the Tiz away for half an hour from the set of HSM2 in Salt Lake City.
INSTINCT: We have to know…is there a little bit of you in Sharpay?
ASHLEY TISDALE: Not really. She’s obviously the villain, and I don’t really relate to her. The only thing I can relate to is that she’s driven and she loves to perform. I love to create different characters—that’s why I love acting. I like to go and do the wardrobe and stuff and pick out the clothes for her. I like creating a whole new person.
Did you base the character on anyone you knew in real life?
I really like Rachel McAdams’ character, Regina, in Mean Girls— you love to hate her. I wanted to make my character still likable, like she did. I took a bit of that and people I knew from high school.
You’ve become such a Disney Channel staple at this point. Are you looking to transition to feature films?
There are a couple projects I’m looking to when I get the time. Right now, I’m really busy doing Suite Life and High School Musical 2 and my solo career, so hopefully I’ll be able to do something this summer.
Speaking of your music career, some
of the songs on your album Headstrong deal with a material that’s a bit
more adult, and relationships you’ve been in. Is it tough to balance
being a 21-year-old with keeping a "Disney” image?
Yeah. Definitely. I think that people don’t really realize I am 21 and
playing younger, and so I hope that even though I have all my Disney
Channel characters, they get to see me as Ashley Tisdale and what I’ve
been through—that it’s okay for me to be saying certain things because
I am
older. I’m not someone who’s gonna be doing something horrible. I don’t
drink. I don’t smoke. I don’t go clubbing or anything. If kids look up
to me, that’s pretty cool, but I don’t feel any pressure. I just hope
that parents see me in a way that the stuff I do or sing about is
nothing really that sexual. I think some critics can actually read into
the songs a little bit differently and tend to look for things that
really aren’t there.
One of your songs is called “Over
It.” Were you aware Jordan Pruitt and Katharine McPhee each have songs
called “Over It” on their latest albums?
Let me tell you, it was hilarious…I co-wrote the song months ago. It
was actually supposed to be called something else. I was like, “What
about ‘Over It’? That sounds really catchy.” Then another writer came
to me with the same song called “Over It”! I said, “Well, I’m not gonna
record a song that I’ve already touched on as a subject that I
co-wrote. I’m not gonna sing a song that another writer wrote for me.”
Then, all of a sudden, I heard Katharine McPhee’s “Over It” [Laughs]
and Jordan Pruitt’s as well, and I thought, You’ve gotta be kidding me!
I guess it’s just a very popular phrase. A lot of people must be over
it. But I do have to say, I don’t know about them, but my story is the
truth. I definitely lived through it.
Are you in a relationship currently, or is it tough to date with your schedule?
Um,
I don’t know—maybe, maybe not! [Laughs] I think you can make it work.
People tend to say, “Oh, I’m too busy,” but I think that if you’re in a
relationship with somebody, you just have to make it work and be
supportive of each other’s careers.
So your official answer on being in a relationship is, “Maybe, maybe not”?
Yeah! [Laughs]
Tell us about your dog, Blondie. Were you able to take her on the High School Musical tour with you?
I
did! I took her on the tour at the very beginning, but I don’t think
she was very happy there. She was kind of depressed being on the tour
bus. She didn’t like snow. We’re from L.A. so she’d never been in the
snow before and she didn’t want to go out in it.
Do you dress her up in sassy little outfits?
I try to, but she sits still and does not move. She’s, like, completely depressed and upset at me. [Laughs] I try to, though. I get her the Easter Bunny ears. I put them on her, but she’s just miserable.
A few months ago we interviewed Tara
Reid, who, like you, is originally from New Jersey. She told us, “You
can take the girl out of Jersey, but you can’t take the Jersey out of
the girl.” Do you agree?
I don’t think I can. I love Jersey and stuff, but I have a whole
connection with California, and I really feel like a California girl,
probably because I didn’t stay in Jersey long enough. Maybe that’s Tara
Reid’s deal? [Laughs] And I wouldn’t want to act like Tara—no offense!
Headstrong is out now. High School Musical 2 airs on the Disney Channel this August.

Ashley im very inspiered by you , im playing the role of sharpay in my school musical i wish it was on t.v that would be so cool but thats probably not going to happend im just a kid , though i am a very good actress and hope to make it in the big world , since im playing the role of sharpay at my school (lillan schumacher) im not sure what to wear at this performinse , it would be nice if you could help me out i would really like that thanks and have a great day luv yeah! , mariah
