ImageONE IN A MILIAN

Not Only Is Christina Milian's Latest Album So Amazin', But This Month She Scares Our Heart Rate Up A Few Notches In The Horror Flick Pulse

INSTINCT: First order of business. Did you know that “AM To PM” is not on iTunes?
CHRISTINA MILIAN:
Oh, it’s not?

Nope.
I had no clue. I’m definitely gonna look into that. They’ll probably wanna put that on after we get the new album on there so it doesn’t take up all the attention. [Laughs]

Yeah, get on that, ’cause that’s our jam. Now, you’ve done L.A. Gay Pride before.
Yeah, I did! That was about three or four years ago. I’d come from overseas and did that Pride show. I think I’m gonna do some more this year. I can’t wait!

On your new album, So Amazin’, you did something unheard of in this day and age, which was work with the same producers for all the songs.
It’s rare that that happens, but I found a really great chemistry with Cool and Dre. I honestly connected with them and found that I was able to express myself easier and so much better through their music. It definitely gave me the soundtrack to write everything that was going on in my life at that time.

How old were you when you started writing your own music?
I started writing music when I was 17 years old, because I needed a demo to help me get a record deal. Every time I recorded a song, [the producer] wouldn’t give me the demo, or they would write lyrics that I didn’t agree with or a song I didn’t like. So I just had to take it upon myself to write a song on my own demo and send it out.

You also wrote hits for a couple other artists.
Yeah, “Play” [for J.Lo] and a few others.

Was it frustrating not to have your first album put out here in the States?
At first it was exciting, just because I thought I was building a fan base overseas. But eventually it was like promotion was going on forever, and I was never able to come back. I have two younger sisters who I’m close with, and they were growing up and I wasn’t around them. And then I’m watching other girls come out before me and I’m doing the same kind of music. That was a little bit frustrating because I knew the label was holding me back from my opportunity over here in the States.

You’ve also got the movie Pulse coming out. Do you ever get time off?
My schedule’s crazy! [Laughs] Lately it’s been all work. This past weekend I had a day off and I went to a wedding, but that’s not really a lot of time. I think at the end of this month I’m gonna go to Puerto Rico and spend a couple days. I need it!

All right, level with us: is Pulse worth our 12 bucks? Have you seen it yet?
Not the whole way through. I’ve only seen portions of it recently on a laptop when we were adding some scenes to the movie. But from what I’ve seen, it is really scary, and it’s gonna be so good!

What’s the lowdown on your character?
My character’s name is Isabell. She’s the best friend of Mattie, the main character. Isabell is very much a free-spirited girl. She’s the type that goes to class late, parties late, but is always the loveable, really good friend who is there for you.

Have you seen Kairo, the original Japanese film that Pulse is based on?
No. They wouldn’t let us see it when we were filming because they didn’t want us to make comparisons. I’ll probably have to rent it now.

Are you a fan of scary movies?
I love scary movies!

Have a favorite?
There are so many. I really like The Sixth Sense. Of course, that’s a little more like a mystery. There’s always I Know What You Did Last Summer.

I read that you’re big Janet Jackson fan.
Yes, I am!

Hands down, what’s Miss Jackson’s best album?
To me, the one that I connected with most and fell in love with was the janet album—the one with “If.”

You were presented with a humanitarian award last year at The Reign music awards from the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Yes, I thought I was gonna be hosting or I was gonna present something, but it turned out that they presented me an award for being a role model for young children. It was cool to see that. I’ve never been rewarded that way and never been acknowledged like that. That was really nice of them, and I was happy I was able to show up for the kids.
