STYLED CHILD
Author of the cult hit Cottonmouth Kisses, actor in last year’s film festival fave In The Spotlight, striking WGA screenwriter (at press time) and general red-carpet-stalking fashionista, CLINT CATALYST is in the moment before anyone else is, and has a grand sense of humor to boot—perfect for our pop quiz!
INSTINCT: 1. If you were suddenly in charge of a fashion label, which would it be?
CLINT CATALYST: Black Chandelier, the ready-to-wear division of Salt Lake City-based designer Jared Gold. I met Jared six years ago out of massive admiration for his work. I’d hire a slew of polygamist workers to help him crank out new couture and ready-to-wear on a daily basis. He’s an endless supply of brilliant ideas, that gentleman.
2. What was the last good book you read?
Paint It Black by Janet Fitch.
3. Choose from the following:
a) High School Musical
b) Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion
c) Degrassi Junior High
d) Fast Times At Ridgemont High
I’ve gotta call a tie. Romy and Michele? That—and The Opposite Of Sex—is what made me heart Lisa Kudrow. And Fast Times? Come on! Amy Heckerling is one of my all-time favorite writer/directors and is fab as fuck-all. Plus, I’m pretty sure I learned a thing or two from that film, if memory serves me well.
4. Christian Bale or Hayden Christensen?
Christian Bale. Rent Velvet Goldmine, American Psycho and The Machinist. Throw down a serious triple feature; then try and argue he’s not one of the few thespian greats of this day and age.
5. What’s the best way to attract attention on the red carpet?
Dress in Jared Gold custom couture, complete with an 18-inch, three-dimensional pop-out hat constructed entirely out of paper, a diaphanous black button-down with Victorian silhouettes and clown screen prints, a floppy colonial tie in a terror-stricken shade of pink and high-waisted black-and-white tapestry fabric pants with a dangling pink “shrunken head” on a chain. As far as anyone cool was concerned—from Kathy Griffin to Tim Gunn to Michael Urie—it worked like a magnet for me at the 2007 Emmys. Check out the videos at buzznet.com.
6. With which Ugly Betty character do you most closely identify?
Justin. I would say Mark, but I’m not able to score cell numbers of underwear models. At least not ones that are interested in dating me, anyway. I’m more like Justin, who’d take an episode of Fashion Television over football—and isn’t so jaded that he’s “over” everything.
7. What was the first CD you ever bought?
Dead Can Dance, The Serpent’s Egg.
8. Choose one: Kate or Naomi?
Neither. If we’re gonna talk about British models, there’ll be none of these worn-out old names who’ve already lost their sense of intrigue and mystery. My pick of the U.K. crop is Agyness Deyn.
9. What is in your DVD player right now?
Nothing. I still have one, but these days I rely pretty much on the iPod in my tree-house [for entertainment], and the backup I keep in my auto. This week’s songs with heaviest rotation are “Oxford Comma” by Vampire Weekend; “Thoughts On The Floor” by I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness; “Boys” by The Autumns; “You Know I’m No Good” by Amy Winehouse; and “Baby’s Romance” by Chris Garneau.
10. True or false: Celebrity fashion lines are a good idea.
Like Montezuma’s Revenge or an incurable STD, they’re a good idea to avoid. As with anything, there are exceptions—Gwen Stefani’s take on Vivienne Westwood à la “L.A.M.B.”
11. What is one TV show you can’t miss?
Weeds. I hate pot and pothead suburbanites, but love watching Mary-Kate [Olsen] peddle it “for Jesus.” Plus, Mary-Louise Parker and Elizabeth Perkins? Jenji Kohan scripts the hell out of those two. I’m just sayin’.
