ImageOh, Baby!

You May Remember Her As Baby Spice, But Emma Bunton Is All Grown Up And Ready To Seduce America With Her First Stateside Solo Album, Free Me

INSTINCT: Hi, Emma! Tell us about Free Me. Was it a big risk to put it out, since it sounds so different from all the other pop music out now?
EMMA BUNTON: I didn’t think it was a risk when I was writing it, because I just went with how I really wanted to do the album. I’m a huge Motown fan, and all my inspiration came mainly from Motown music or Latin music. I wanted to do something a little bit different, and I wanted to have fun with it.

You worked with Cathy Dennis, who’s gone from being a pop star herself to a huge songwriter in the UK.
She’s an amazing writer. I’ve been friends with her for years. It was quite funny, because actually we got together and ended up getting takeaway and a bottle of wine and didn’t do much the first day! [Laughs]

So she’s not a ball-busting witch in the studio?
Oh, no! She’s fantastic! We really had so much fun. I also worked with Henry Binns from Zero 7. I would sit down with the producers and listen to some music with them and say exactly how I wanted it to be.

How important is it for you to have a gay following?
It’s so important! It’s a big part of my life. I do a lot of gay clubs in London and I always have the most amazing time! I can just be myself and go over the top. I love it!

The first time I went to G-A-Y in London, I heard a great remix of your song “Maybe.”
Oh, wow! Fantastic! My best, best friend, who’s gay, took me there for my birthday not long ago. There was a drag queen that did “Maybe,” and I just absolutely loved it! I was over the moon!

Well, that’s when you know you’ve made it—when the drag queens are doing your songs.
Sometimes I’m a bit jealous because they actually look better.

Let’s clear up some myths about you. Do you smoke cigars?
No!

Do you clean your house in the nude?
[Laughs] Um, I’ve probably been known to, actually! Obviously I’m very aware, especially in London, there’s quite a lot of paparazzi. You never know who’s watching. But it’s very liberating to be able to walk around your flat naked.

And let’s face it; the house just looks cleaner when you dust without panties on. I’m actually going to try it and tell everyone that you recommended it.
Yeah, have a go. Get the Hoover out!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve been asked to autograph?
I’ve had chests and bottoms and arms. You just think, That’s gonna go, because you’re gonna wash. But then they say, “I’m never gonna wash this,” and I think, Please do!

On a scale of one to ten, how much do you never want to be asked if you snogged Justin Timberlake again?
Probably about an eight or a nine. But the thing is, I like to be honest and open, so I really don’t mind. I was at a party with him [when he was in ’NSync and I was in Spice Girls] and we chatted, and that was as far as it went.

So are you dating anyone now?
There’s lots of stories, because I dated a guy a long time ago who is now probably my best friend. You know, we still go to dinner now and again. But I think it’s really hard to totally commit to somebody when you’re away so much. I’m so busy traveling, and I wouldn’t want to have the pressure. I just don’t have time for anyone! [Laughs]

You did a guest stint on Absolutely Fabulous last year. So who can down a bottle of champagne quicker, the Spice Girls or the Ab Fab girls?
Oooh. Well, there’s more of us, so we could probably do it quicker.

Was that a good time, working with Jennifer Saunders?
It was one of the most amazing experiences. I’ve known Jennifer for many years now. She approached me to do one episode, and it turned out that we got on so well I did another episode. And actually, they’ve been in contact again, so I might be doing something again next year with them. It was amazing, and I’m really looking forward to doing it again.

It probably didn’t even feel like you were working.
It didn’t. Obviously I was playing myself. There was one bit where I had to shout at Jennifer Saunders, and you do it in front of an audience. The whole audience gasped, like, Emma Bunton’s shouting! I just felt like saying, “Yes, this is another part of me you don’t know.” [Laughs]
